Dog Breed Profiles: The Barbet

The Barbet is an older French breed but is also considered to be the original water dog.

The Barbet may go by many names including the Barbet Water Spaniel, the Griffon D’Arret A Poil Laineux and the French Water Dog. Their name comes from ‘barbe,’ a French word meaning ‘beard.’ These dogs have been around for hundreds of years and are considered to be one of the older French breeds, but also is considered to be the original water dog.

Barbet: Appearance and Grooming

Ideally, a Barbet should weigh between 33 and 58 pounds when fully grown. This breed comes in several different colors including chestnut, fawn, black and gray. All of these colors may come with or without white markings.

According to the United Kennel Club, the Barbet is a medium-sized breed with a thick, wooly coat. Furthermore, the Continental Kennel Club adds that these coats are long and shiny; all of which are considered beneficial since this breed is a type of water dog. They may be described as similar in appearance to a Portuguese Water Dog or a larger breed of Poodle, which are also types of water dogs.

With such a distinct appearance, it is no surprise that the Barbet requires regular grooming. Without regular brushing or a once-over with the comb, it is not uncommon for the Barbet’s coat to form cords.

Temperament and Personality: The Barbet

The CKC describes the Barbet as an energetic and free-spirited breed of dog. The UKC adds that these dogs should not be timid or aggressive in any way; but they should be faithful to their masters.

This breed of dog loves water and make great companions for hunters, as they are great for wild fowling. They are not put off by cold weather and will go into the water no matter what the weather is like.

The Barbet: Health Issues

Certain bloodlines of the Barbet may suffer from allergies, which can range from mild to severe. Dogs display the symptoms of an allergic reaction through the skin and the type of allergen that affects each individual dog may be different. Examples of potential allergens include the same allergens that could affect a human; including pollen, dust or even mold.

Cataracts may also occur in some Barbets, though this should not be confused with the normal aging process in which nuclear sclerosis occurs.

Hip Dysplasia is not uncommon in the barbet breed either. Hip dysplasia is a condition where the ball joint of the hip regularly pops in and out of the socket joint, eventually eroding away at the bones, causing pain; among other issues.
